With preliminary peace talks in Egypt causing a slight dip in airstrikes, Gaza's health authorities reported 21 deaths and 96 wounded on Sunday, according to OCHA. Yet deadly shelling and gunfire continue to endanger civilians.
Humanitarian access across the Gaza Strip remains a maze. OCHA says eight missions were approved by Israeli authorities to deliver fuel, food, and medical supplies via the Kerem Shalom crossing and to install a solar panel in Deir al-Balah. Six missions were denied and five were canceled, underscoring the challenges aid teams face. ⚙️
To keep hospitals, generators, and kitchens running, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher allocated $9 million from the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund. This lifeline ensures fuel for ambulances, water pumps, and 12 operational kitchens in northern Gaza.
Over the weekend, humanitarian partners prepared and distributed 885,000 meals through 167 kitchens across the Strip. But with only a dozen kitchens open up north, aid workers are racing south to meet the needs of families on the move.
Displacement sites in southern Gaza are bursting at the seams. Some families have set up 70 tents at Al Amal garbage dump, while others risk returning north despite Gaza City's status as a dangerous combat zone. OCHA says it's locked and loaded, ready to deliver large-scale aid once conditions allow.
"We've been ready, and the machinery is cranked up," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. "Thousands of metric tonnes are in the pipeline… just give the green light and we'll move the trucks." 🚚✨
