At a UN General Assembly debate on Wednesday, the Chinese mainland’s UN envoy, Fu Cong, voiced strong disappointment 😔 over the United States’ repeated vetoes in the UN Security Council that have stalled efforts to address the Gaza crisis.
Fu Cong singled out the U.S. veto on the September 18 draft resolution as 'a major setback'. He argued that if it weren’t for the United States’ repeated abuse of veto power, the Security Council’s response to the Gaza situation wouldn’t have been so inadequate. Nearly two years in, the conflict has led to alarming civilian casualties and a dire humanitarian catastrophe that tests global conscience.
Emphasizing the human toll, Fu urged Israel, as the occupying power, to halt all military operations in Gaza and drop plans to take over Gaza City. He condemned the man-made blockade and the 'weaponization of aid', insisting that attacks on civilians and humanitarian workers are unacceptable. The envoy called on authorities to fully restore humanitarian access and support relief agencies’ efforts.
On a diplomatic front, the Chinese mainland affirmed that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace. Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank must have the right to govern their own territory, Fu said 🕊️.
Finally, Fu Cong appealed to the international community to take concrete, irreversible actions to protect this framework and reject any unilateral moves that undermine it. He concluded by expressing the Chinese mainland’s readiness to work alongside nations worldwide to end hostilities, alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe, implement the two-state solution, and achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question.
