China’s Climate Power-Up at UN Summit
At the UN Climate Summit 2025 on Wednesday, China dropped some major green energy moves by unveiling its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). For the first time ever, the Chinese mainland set an absolute emissions reduction target covering all economy-wide greenhouse gases. Talk about a power-up! ⚡🌱
Ambitious 2035 Goals
Chinese President Xi Jinping, via video 📹, said "Green and low-carbon transition is the trend of the time." He called on the global squad to keep the momentum, boost confidence, and get things done. Here’s the mission:
- Slash net greenhouse gas emissions by 7–10% from peak levels by 2035.
- Boost non-fossil fuel use to over 30% of total energy consumption.
- Ramp up wind and solar capacity to a whopping 3,600 GW (6× 2020 levels).
- Grow forest stock volume beyond 24 billion m³, serving as earth’s green lungs. 🌳
Why It Matters
China’s confidence comes from real wins so far. Since announcing its "peak before 2030, neutrality before 2060" goals in 2020, non-fossil energy share climbed from 15.9% to 19.8% (2024). Wind, solar, and forest targets for 2030 are already in the bag—way ahead of schedule. 🚀
Over the past decade, China has also boosted South-South cooperation on climate, supercharged green Belt and Road projects, and fueled sustainable growth for the Global South. These new commitments are set to energize global climate governance and build shared momentum for a greener future. 🌏✨
