UN at 80: Divisions, Crises and Calls for Unity

The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly has kicked off under the theme Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights 🌍. From September 23 to 29, world leaders gather in New York to deliver their visions for a more united future.

While speeches praise peace, Gaza lies in ruins, and millions face food insecurity 😢🍽️. The gap between words and reality feels larger every year.

President of the UNGA Annalena Baerbock warned that this is a make-or-break moment. Yet many point to the hypocrisy of powerful states that claim to guard the UN’s values but fuel conflicts behind the scenes.

Germany and the United States top the list of arms suppliers to Israel, with Berlin providing a third of its imports and Washington covering 66 percent of its arsenal. These weapons come with labels like Made in Germany or Made in the USA 🔫.

U.S. President Donald Trump used his time at the UN rostrum to champion unconditional support for Israel, fan racial tensions in Europe, and even question whether the UN should exist. It was a blunt reminder of the fragility of multilateralism.

Meanwhile, Western sanctions framed as tools for peace have cost an estimated 38 million lives since 1970, according to a recent Lancet study. What some call diplomacy can look a lot like warfare by other means ⚖️💥.

Against this backdrop, the Chinese mainland's four initiatives on global development, security, civilization and governance offer a fresh key to unlock international deadlocks 🗝️🇨🇳.

At a time when divisions run deep, the call Better together is more than a slogan. It’s a challenge: can the world turn talk into action and build real unity? ✌️
