At the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, a chorus of global leaders amplified their support for the two-state solution as Gaza nears the two-year anniversary of war and devastation.
A united plea for peace 🕊️
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres slammed the ongoing tragedy in Gaza, calling it “a scale of death and destruction beyond any other conflict” in his tenure. He urged the immediate enforcement of International Court of Justice measures, a permanent ceasefire, hostage releases, and full humanitarian access, insisting that “we must not relent in the only viable answer to sustainable Middle East peace: a two-state solution.”
Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva denounced terror attacks by Hamas and highlighted the collapse of international humanitarian law under the rubble, stating that “the survival of the Palestinian people requires an independent state.”
In Jakarta’s corner, President Prabowo Subianto voiced Indonesia’s “complete support” for both Palestine and Israel to be “free and independent, safe and secure.” He even offered to send 20,000 peacekeepers to the region and recalled how Indonesia’s rice shipments reached those in need, including Palestinians.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II stressed that “security will only come when Palestine and Israel begin to co-exist side by side,” calling for an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital “alongside a secure Israel … living in peace with its neighbors.”
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakh support for diplomatic efforts toward regional reconciliation, while Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev warned against ignoring “the deeply worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip,” urging an immediate halt to hostilities and continued political talks in line with UN resolutions.
With these powerful statements, world leaders hope to breathe new life into the two-state solution and pave the way for lasting peace in the Middle East. 🌍💬
