Get ready to time-travel! This Sunday, Dunhuang – a desert oasis in the Chinese mainland once famous for caravans of silk and tea – kicked off the 8th Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo. Over 1,200 delegates from 97 countries and 8 international organizations touched down to share, learn, and celebrate the world’s cultural tapestry. 🌏✨
For two days, the expo buzzes with everything from cultural dialogues and immersive exhibitions to vibrant performances. It’s like Coachella meets TEDx, but in the heart of an ancient trade hub. And guess what? Thailand is this year’s guest of honor, showcasing dazzling ethnic customs and traditions. 🛕🎨
“Dunhuang is a symbol of the Silk Road – where civilizations converge and ideas flow,” said Prasop Riangngoen, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Thailand. He pointed out how the murals of the Mogao Caves share artistic DNA with Thai temple paintings – proof that cultures have been remixing for centuries.
The Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, hold murals that whisper tales of religions, art and ideas that traveled thousands of miles. “These murals are living proof of deep exchanges in religion, art and thought along the Silk Road,” added Qu Xing, deputy director-general of UNESCO.
Two millennia ago, silk and tea flowed west from Dunhuang, while grapes, carrots and pomegranates made their way east. Today, the city still pulses with global energy through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), drawing explorers, scholars and culture buffs eager to unlock its secrets.
Spanning about 24,000 square meters, this year’s expo showcases the latest findings in Dunhuang studies, plus creative products and intangible heritage from across Belt and Road member states and regions. Visitors can dive into a kaleidoscope of tourist attractions, unique customs and stories of heritage protection. 🚀🎭
Whether you’re a history nerd, a travel junkie, or just someone looking for epic cultural vibes, the Silk Road Expo in Dunhuang is your next must-see event. Pack your curiosity – the ancient world is calling!
