Gaza City Residents Resist Evacuation Amid New ‘Humanitarian Zone’

Under the scorching sun of the Gaza Strip, a defiant mood grips Gaza City. Despite an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announcement creating a “humanitarian zone” in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, about 80% of residents are choosing to stay put.

“They want us to move to a place that is already overcrowded,” says Samer Abu Samra, a 38-year-old father of four. “We cannot afford transportation or tents. People are exhausted and coming from hunger.” 💔

For teacher Nasser al-Attar, the memories of displacement in the south are too painful to revisit. “I lived displacement in the south before, and it was the worst experience of my life,” he explains. “The south is not safe either, so staying here is not heroism. It is simply because there is no alternative.”

Mother Umm Mohammed Jaber adds: “We have nothing left to lose but our lives. But displacement also means losing dignity, so we will remain here.” 🛑

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the zone includes warehouses, clinics and distribution centers to keep food, tents, medicines and equipment flowing for those who move.

Over recent weeks, Israeli operations in Gaza City and surrounding areas have expanded, with the stated goal of eliminating Hamas. However, growing segments of Israeli society are calling for a permanent ceasefire to secure the release of hostages.

As Gaza City residents stand their ground, the humanitarian and political challenges in the enclave only deepen, raising urgent questions about safety, resources and the future of its people. ✊
