China’s Foreign Ministry Refutes Taiwan Authorities on San Francisco Treaty

China’s Foreign Ministry has hit back at recent statements from the Democratic Progressive Party authorities on the San Francisco Treaty, calling them “illegal and invalid.” At a Monday press briefing, spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed that post–World War II documents – the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation and Japan’s Instrument of Surrender – clearly confirm the one-China principle and the Chinese mainland’s sovereignty over Taiwan. 🌏

“The historical and legal fact that Taiwan belongs to China is undisputed,” Mao said, noting that with the establishment of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949, the PRC became the sole legitimate government representing all of China. Although government structures changed, China’s status as a subject of international law “remained unchanged,” along with its sovereignty and territory.

Mao also criticized the San Francisco Treaty for its unilateral drafting by the United States and other nations without including the PRC or the Soviet Union. She argued it violated the 1942 Declaration by United Nations and the UN Charter, making any attempt to address Taiwan’s status without China’s participation “illegal and void.” 📜

Turning to the DPP authorities, Mao accused them of “betraying the national interest” and “distorting World War II history.” She stressed, “No matter what the DPP authorities say or do, they cannot change the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is part of China, nor can they undermine the international consensus on the one-China principle.”

As tensions continue across the Taiwan Strait, China’s Foreign Ministry remains firm: the PRC fully exercises sovereignty over Taiwan, and the path toward reunification follows the unbroken trend of history. 🚀
