Boat Capsizes in Sokoto: 10 Saved, Over 40 Missing

🚨 A sudden rush of water and panic struck a passenger boat early Sunday in Nigeria's northwestern Sokoto State. The boat, packed with more than 50 people heading to a local market, capsized in the swollen river.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), rescuers pulled 10 survivors from the water but over 40 passengers remain missing. Teams are racing against time, combing the riverbanks and using speedboats to chase any sign of life. 🙏

Boat accidents are alarmingly common during Nigeria's rainy season. Rising waters, overcrowded vessels, and poor maintenance create a risky mix on the country's waterways.

In August 2024, 16 farmers lost their lives when a wooden canoe flipped in Sokoto State. Just last month, six girls drowned after their boat capsized in Jigawa State, and days before that, at least 13 people died in another tragic accident in Niger State.

Local volunteers and NEMA officials are calling for stricter safety rules and better training for boat operators. As communities await news about the missing passengers, many hope for the best while pushing for real change to prevent future tragedies. 🌧️🚤
