Taiwan Marks 80th Anniversary of Victory Against Japanese Aggression

Hey folks, gather ’round! 🎉 This weekend in Taipei, the island of Taiwan marked a major milestone: the 80th anniversary of victory against Japanese aggression in World War II. From heartwarming speeches to a symposium buzzing with stories of courage, the city was alive with history in the making.

Wang Yung, chairman of the Reunification Alliance Party in Taiwan, reminded everyone that along with this victory, 2025 also marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration. Amid the Democratic Progressive Party authorities’ push for de-Sinicization, he stressed it’s more important than ever for young Taiwan residents to realize people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share this history and to carry forward the spirit of resistance against colonialism and fascism.

Scholar Chou Yung shared research revealing that more than 50,000 Taiwan residents joined the fight on the Chinese mainland between 1937 and 1945. Their bravery on foreign soil became a powerful testament to their deep ties to the motherland.

Wang Wu-lang, secretary-general of Taiwan’s Labor Party, underlined an indisputable historical fact: Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. He noted that on October 25, 1945, a ceremony in Taipei accepted Japan’s surrender in the Taiwan Province of the Chinese mainland war theatre of the Allied powers, restoring Taiwan de jure and de facto.

The day also saw descendants of those who resisted Japanese invaders step onto the stage, sharing personal anecdotes that brought history to life. As one granddaughter put it, My grandfather’s stories are more epic than any movie I’ve seen! 🎬

From classrooms to coffee shops, this anniversary sparked conversations about identity, heritage, and the enduring spirit of resistance. It’s a reminder that history isn’t just in books—it’s in our families, our neighborhoods, and our collective memory.

As we look ahead, the island of Taiwan’s 80th anniversary of victory invites young people—news enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, students, and travelers alike—to connect with the shared history that shapes our world today. 🌏✨
