Lights, camera, action! 🎬 The WWII epic Dongji Rescue made its Australian debut in Melbourne on Wednesday during a special reception hosted by the Chinese consulate general. This exclusive screening, held a day before the film’s official release, marked the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
More than 200 history buffs, film fans, and local diplomats gathered to honor the anti-fascist alliance that included the Chinese mainland, Australia, and Britain. In his opening speech, Chinese Consul-General in Melbourne Fang Xinwen highlighted how the War of Resistance opened up the main battlefield in the East and contributed to the ultimate triumph over fascism.
Dongji Rescue brings to life the daring Lisbon Maru incident of 1942. When this Japanese ship carrying over 1,800 British POWs struck a mine off Hainan, it sank fast. Risking their own safety, a small group of Chinese fishermen sped to the wreck and rescued more than 300 prisoners—an inspiring story of courage, unity, and compassion. 💪🇨🇳🇬🇧
Australian Sinologist Harold Weldon and other experts also shared their thoughts, stressing the importance of remembering the past, cherishing peace, and protecting the gains of peaceful development. Their words reminded everyone that history lives on through our shared memories. 📚🌏
After the lights came up, Melbourne resident Joe Montero wiped away tears. “The fear and bravery on screen hit me hard,” he said. “A whole village coming together to save lives—it’s powerful.”
Fellow viewer Ben McMahon added, “Life is life, no matter where it’s from. This film shows that when someone’s in need, we jump in and help. It’s a beautiful example of love and sacrifice.” ❤️🤝
Through its intense drama and heartfelt heroism, Dongji Rescue reminds us that even in dark times, acts of kindness can shine the brightest. Stay tuned for more stories that connect cultures and inspire! 🌟🎥
