Heads up! The UN Security Council is raising its voice over Israel’s plan to take control of Gaza City 🚨. Delegates fear this move could uproot nearly a million people and turn the humanitarian situation even worse.
Miroslav Jenca, the UN assistant secretary-general for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas, laid out the details during an emergency session. He explained that the plan aims to “defeat Hamas” by disarming the group, securing the release of hostages, and demilitarizing the Gaza Strip. Israel would then exert security control over the entire strip and set up a new civilian administration – one that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.
But here’s the nail-biter: the plan also involves preparing for an IDF takeover of Gaza City, while funneling humanitarian aid outside active combat zones. Jenca warned that by October 7, around 800,000 people – many already displaced – could be forced to leave their homes. Reports say the IDF would surround the city for three months, then spend two more months clearing out central Gaza’s camps.
Critics in the Security Council called it “another dangerous escalation” that could spell disaster for civilians. With thousands already suffering, uprooting nearly a million people risks collapsing basic services and sending more families into uncertainty and fear 😔.
As the world watches, the question remains: can humanitarian aid keep up, and is there a path to protect Gaza’s residents? For now, alarm bells are ringing from New York to the Middle East.
