In a remarkable leap for burn care, Chinese scientists have unveiled a novel bioactive dressing that stops bleeding in less than 60 seconds. Researchers from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ruijin Hospital transformed bacterial cellulose (BC) – celebrated for its breathability and skin-friendly nature – into a high-performance wound dressing.
By anchoring the body’s natural clotting enzyme, thrombin, with a special cellulose-binding domain acting as a biological glue, they created Thrombin-Anchored BC (T-BC). This supercharged dressing not only controls bleeding rapidly during burn treatment but also signals the body to activate self-repair pathways, opening the door to a new era in burn care.
