Thailand-Cambodia Border Clash: UN Calls for Ceasefire

Fierce clashes have reignited along the Thailand-Cambodia border, with both sides exchanging heavy fire in a dramatic escalation. On Thursday, jets, tanks, artillery, and ground troops turned a long-standing dispute into a dangerous reality that alarmed the region. 🚨

Cambodia’s envoy at the United Nations, Chhea Keo, called for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire, urging both parties to resolve the conflict peacefully. This demand resonated at an emergency UN Security Council meeting, where maximum restraint was strongly recommended.

The situation is critical: reports confirm that heavy artillery fire on the Cambodian side has tragically claimed the life of a 70-year-old civilian and injured several others. In Thailand, over 138,000 people have been evacuated from border areas, with 15 fatalities—including 14 civilians and a soldier—and many more wounded.

Early Friday morning, fighting resumed in three hotspots, with Cambodian forces launching heavy weapons and Thai troops responding with supporting fire. Despite the tension, Thai officials noted that the situation had started to ease by Friday afternoon, and there is now openness toward diplomatic talks, possibly with assistance from Malaysia under ASEAN's guidance.

This intense episode serves as a reminder of how quickly situations can escalate along troubled borders. As the international community watches closely, many hope that dialogue will soon replace conflict and that peace will prevail. ✌️
