This tragic event adds to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where daily life is a struggle. Over 11,600 people were newly displaced between July 8 and 15, pushing the overall number of displaced individuals to more than 737,000—around 35% of Gaza’s population. Many residents now find themselves living in the open as their homes are reduced to rubble.
The challenges extend beyond displacement. Due to the near-total collapse of water infrastructure, families have been forced to rely on the Mediterranean Sea for essential needs, despite restrictions imposed along the coast. Although a small yet critical amount of benzene has recently been allowed into Gaza to power ambulances and vital services, severe fuel shortages continue to hamper relief efforts.
In his statement, Secretary-General Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire, the safe passage of humanitarian aid, and the unconditional release of all hostages.
