Chinese scientists have reached a major milestone in livestock science! A completely black-coated cloned yak calf was born via cesarean section at a yak breeding base in Damxung County, southwest Xizang Autonomous Region, on Thursday.
The newborn weighs an impressive 33.5 kilograms—heavier than most yak calves—and is already showing signs of strength by walking confidently. This project, which began in July 2023, is a joint effort by a research team from Zhejiang University, the Damxung County government, and the Institute of Plateau Biology of Xizang Autonomous Region.
Using innovative whole-genome selection and somatic cell cloning technologies, the scientists are paving the way for improved yak breeds and a robust breeding system for high-altitude livestock. Yaks are indispensable to the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, supporting both local herders and the unique ecosystem of the region.
This breakthrough not only highlights the merging of tradition and modern science, but also promises exciting advancements in sustainable agriculture. Stay tuned for more updates on this fascinating journey! 🐂✨
