World’s Largest Solar-Powered Car Carrier Sets Sail

In a record-breaking moment, the world's largest solar-powered car carrier, Yuan Hai Kou, has completed its maiden voyage by docking at Greece's Piraeus Port with 4,000 Chinese vehicles on board. This vessel is not your average ship—it’s a cutting-edge blend of technology and sustainability, making waves in the shipping world. 🚢☀️

Equipped with a 302.8-kilowatt solar system that produces 410,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, the Yuan Hai Kou reduces its lifecycle carbon intensity by 35 percent compared to conventional ships. Its dual-fuel engine, running on liquefied natural gas and fuel oil, cuts energy consumption by 20 percent and lowers carbon emissions by over 24 percent. For example, a round trip between China and Europe shaves off 2,100 tonnes of emissions.

Measuring 199.9 meters in length with 12 vehicle decks—eight fixed and four adjustable—the carrier can transport up to 7,000 vehicles, including passenger cars, engineering trucks, and buses. Additionally, proprietary software developed by COSCO Shipping ensures real-time vehicle tracking and enhanced safety with fire warnings.

"The successful maiden voyage of the Yuan Hai Kou is a practical step in COSCO Shipping's global channel strategy, integrating shipping, ports and logistics, and marking a new era for low-carbon transformation in the shipping industry," said Zhang Wei, chairman of COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Co., Ltd. This achievement comes as the fleet has notably increased its performance, transporting over 100,000 vehicles to Belt and Road partner countries from January to May this year—a 173 percent year-on-year growth.

This innovative journey signals a bright future for a greener, tech-driven shipping industry, inspiring young entrepreneurs, tech enthusiasts, and global explorers alike!
