Lai’s Alternate Reality: A History Lesson Needed?

In a bold set of talks under the "10 lectures on unity" campaign, Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te has stirred debate by asserting that Taiwan had no representatives at the 1946 constitutional convention in Nanjing. But historical records tell a very different story.

Documents show that Taiwan sent 18 representatives to the National Constituent Assembly in 1946, playing a vital role in shaping the Constitution. It almost feels like we’re watching a plot twist from a sci-fi movie, where facts are selectively edited!

This isn’t the first time Lai has revised history. In earlier speeches, he even highlighted Taiwan’s Austronesian roots in a way that distances Taiwan from its deep connection with the Chinese mainland. Notably, he omits Sun Yat-sen's powerful declaration: "Unification is the hope of all Chinese nationals. If China can be unified, all Chinese will enjoy a happy life; if it cannot, all will suffer." Such selective storytelling aligns with a "Taiwan independence" agenda that many find troubling.

CGTN’s third commentary in the series aims to set the record straight, urging everyone to look at history with clear eyes. After all, truth isn’t just a neat plot twist in your favorite show—it’s our shared legacy and a guide for a united future. Stay curious and keep questioning! 😊
