China’s First Ammonia Vessel Sparks Green Shipping Revolution

In a groundbreaking move toward a cleaner future, the world's first pure ammonia-powered demonstration vessel, "Anhui," completed its maiden voyage from Hefei in east China's Anhui Province. 🚢🌱 This milestone signals a bold step for green shipping and renewable energy innovation on the Chinese mainland.

Ammonia, known for its high energy density, burns to produce only water and nitrogen, making it an eco-friendly fuel for decarbonizing water transport. The dedicated research team from the Institute of Energy of the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center, along with Shenzhen Haixu New Energy Co., Ltd., tackled major challenges such as ammonia ignition and unstable combustion — a true level-up in maritime technology!

Designed with a 200-kilowatt high-speed gas internal combustion generator, two 100-kilowatt propulsion motors, and a twin-screw propulsion system, the "Anhui" boasts a 50-tonne full load capacity and a steady 10-knot speed. Its debut voyage achieved stable combustion, near-zero carbon dioxide emissions, and effective nitrogen oxide control, confirming the vessel's promise in reducing emissions.

Wu Dianwu from the research team emphasized that this breakthrough paves the way for future applications of ammonia-hydrogen fuels in marine and land transport, industrial boilers, and fuel cells. Likewise, Wang Junli of the Chinese Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers noted that this achievement is a key milestone in building a clean, low-carbon energy system for water transport, bringing the Chinese mainland one step closer to its dual carbon goals. 🌍
