A long-awaited delivery of UN humanitarian aid has finally reached Gaza after nearly 80 days of a blockade. In a daring nighttime operation, about 90 truckloads of essential supplies rolled into the region, promising a much-needed boost in the fight against famine.
Among these supplies, nearly 20 truckloads carrying around 500 pallets of nutrition items—including ready-to-use therapeutic food and lipid-based nutritional supplements—were safely offloaded at UNICEF's warehouse in Deir al-Balah. These crucial resources are now being repackaged into smaller loads for distribution across dozens of community points.
In a positive turn, several bakeries in southern and central Gaza, supported by the World Food Programme, have resumed bread production. Community kitchens are now able to distribute fresh bread, providing some relief to locals amid challenging times.
Despite this hopeful development, the aid represents only a fraction of what is needed for Gaza's 2.1 million residents. Essential items such as fresh food, hygiene products, water purification agents, and fuel for hospitals remain in scarce supply. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stressed the urgent need for Israeli authorities to ease the movement of humanitarian convoys across the region, including commercial trucks transporting fresh produce.
