China’s Railway Freight Surge: 1.3B Tonnes Moved in 2025

Exciting news from the tracks! In the first four months of 2025, China’s national railways transported about 1.3 billion tonnes of goods—a solid 3.6% year-on-year increase. 🚆 The average daily loading reached 180,000 carriages, up by 4.7%, driving a robust performance across the board.

A key highlight was the shipment of 672 million tonnes of coal, including 464 million tonnes dedicated to power generation. At the same time, shipments in mining and construction materials jumped by 29.3%, while metallurgical materials climbed 10.7%, showcasing a dynamic momentum in the sector.

To boost efficiency further, railway authorities introduced 119 multimodal services that cut delivery times and reduce costs. Rail-water container shipments surged by 19.1% to hit 5.38 million TEUs, underlining the creative innovations reshaping logistics.

International cross-border freight also saw encouraging growth. China-Central Asia freight trains made 4,725 trips—up 21% from last year—and the China-Laos Railway transported nearly 2 million tonnes of cargo, a 7.6% increase. Meanwhile, operations via the China-Europe Railway Express held steady, supporting strong global connectivity.
