Embassy Open Day Shines Light on Gansu Transformation

This weekend, the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. opened its doors to over 10,000 visitors for an annual Open Day that celebrated culture, diplomacy, and international dialogue.

This year, the spotlight was on Gansu—a region in northwest the Chinese mainland famed for its historic role along the ancient Silk Road and its impressive transformation. Once one of its poorest provinces, Gansu has lifted more than 5.5 million residents out of poverty and embraced digital innovation, symbolizing resilience and progress.

Ambassador Xie Feng delivered a keynote speech on May 3 titled "A Certain China in an Uncertain World," urging openness and cooperation amid global uncertainties. He stressed, "Openness brings progress, while isolation leads to stagnation. Trade isn’t a zero-sum game—building barriers only blocks shared growth." He also criticized tariff hikes, noting that such measures disrupt businesses, raise costs, and slow down global growth.

Visitors enjoyed interactive exhibits like the "Digital Dunhuang," a virtual showcase of ancient Buddhist grottoes, and got hands-on with traditional Chinese medicine, calligraphy, and modern tech innovations. The day underscored the blend of history and modernity, culture and progress. 😊

As the event concluded, Ambassador Xie reaffirmed China’s commitment to global engagement and mutual respect, declaring that "China’s door to the world will only open wider." This message resonated with many, highlighting a vision of connection and shared prosperity in an uncertain world.
