Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada will impose a 25% tariff on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) of U.S. goods in response to the recent U.S. tariffs. Starting Tuesday, C$30 billion will take effect, followed by C$125 billion in 21 days.
Trump had earlier signed an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico starting on Tuesday, exempting only Canadian energy products, which face a 10% duty.
Trudeau warned that the upcoming weeks would be challenging for Canadians and emphasized that Trump's tariffs would also negatively impact Americans. Addressing the U.S., he stated, \"They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store, gas at the pump. They will impede your access to an affordable supply of vital goods.\"
The Canadian tariffs will affect American beer, wine, bourbon, fruits like Florida’s orange juice, clothing, sports equipment, and household appliances. Additionally, Canada is considering non-tariff measures related to critical minerals, energy procurement, and other partnerships.
Encouraging economic resilience, Trudeau urged Canadians to buy local products and consider staying home for vacations instead of traveling to the U.S. \"We didn't ask for this but we will not back down,\" Trudeau affirmed.
