Thousands of residents in northeastern Athens and the wider Attica region faced a sleepless Monday night as a massive wildfire threatened the nation's capital for the second night in a row. The fierce blaze, driven by strong winds and dry conditions, has rapidly spread across multiple fronts, engulfing areas near the city.
Despite a heroic effort from over 700 firefighters, military personnel, volunteers, 35 water-dropping aircraft, and helicopters, the wildfire continues to rage. \"The fire's spread has been relentless, but we're giving it everything we've got,\" said a spokesperson from the Fire Brigade.
However, there's a glimmer of hope. By Monday night, the situation had improved in several other regions, offering a sigh of relief to those communities. Yet, the battle is far from over as Athens remains on high alert.
